Our first trip to Murchison Falls in northern Uganda was a true adventure with the Foan family and Grammy and Marlaine, fresh off the plane from Massachusetts. We stopped at the top of the falls on the way in and saw beautiful giraffes (only park in Uganda with giraffes), lions and many other animals all over the park. One of our park guides told us this was the largest game park on the continent 40 years ago with hundreds of thousands of animals of every type. Uganda's bush war under Idi Amin resulted in the extinction of the rhino and zebra at this park, as well as large decrease in number of animals throughout the park due to poaching and lack of regulation.

We were lucky enough to find these two brother lions twice in two days. One appeared to have been caught in a snare and his leg had been amputated by park vets. It seems he has been in another fight recently so is limping on his good back leg. Amazing and heartening to watch the strong brother take care of and nuzzle his limping brother across the savannah just 15 feet away from us.
