Chimps and Rhinos

The next stop on the tour of Uganda was in the Budongo Forest Reserve, home to the largest population of chimpanzees in Uganda. It is also the largest mahogany forest in East Africa. Naomi and Kate stayed back at the lodge (children under 15 aren't allowed into the forest) and Loretta, Lendell and Marlaine took off on foot to track the chimps. They hiked through the dense forest and came upon dozens of symphonic chimps in the trees.

Next we drove back towards Kampala and stopped at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only home to rhinos in Uganda after their decimation (to extinction) during the war. Ziwa has started to build a next rhino population one rhino at a time. They just registered the birth of the 13th rhino, yet unnamed. We put in a vote for her to be named Naomi, or Naome, the common spelling of Naomi in northern Uganda. We tracked rhinos and found five of them at the same time...
