Life in a Banana Republic

Contrary to logic, the current events with Maj. Alfredo have not caused any increased tensions or problems in Dili (follow this link for info:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070228/wl_asia_afp/timorunrestreinado_070228160956).

It should – but hasn’t. The only thing I have noticed is an increase of C-130s landing in the cover of darkness at the airport as the Australian troops beef up, and prepare for all scenarios.

But, the average person on the street….. well if you drive in to a troubled area – they may still throw a rock at you – but that is nothing new. In our “hood” all is calm. In fact on Friday night, folks were out on the street. We thought maybe there was, or was about to be troubles, but when Kate asked they told her that they were watching and betting on the motorbike racing. Yep – a little Street Racer – Dili Edition was happening. Welcome to duality of our existence in this little old Xanana Banana Republic.
