Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

We loved the rhinos at the Ziwa sanctuary about 160km north of Kampala. We traveled with Erika and Rob to stay at the small guesthouse within the 40km sanctuary that is singlehandedly bringing back the Ugandan rhino population. After the population was decimated by war and poaching in the 80s, there were no rhinos in all of Uganda for over a decade. In the late 90s, the reintroduction and breeding project began and the sanctuary now has 13 rhinos! Our favorite, of course, was one of the new babies born in 2009, Obama. He came from an American rhino mom and Kenyan rhino dad. It was a wonderful escape for the weekend and Naomi loved tracking them in the backpack. She no longer confuses hippos and rhinos after getting that close! It was a gift to have great friends visit us and it got us into the holiday spirit!
