Last weekend we took a jaunt to Queen Elizabeth National Park in Western Uganda. Mana Kym came to visit from Timor-Leste after a conference in Entebbe and we were on the hunt for Ugandan wildlife. It was a long and beautiful drive over the Equator and through verdant tea plantations, banana and matoke (local starchy banana and staple crop) stands and acacia-littered plains. As we drove into the park, we came upon a family of baboons on the road and then a whole herd of elephants. Hold your breath stunning. We stayed at a beautiful lodge up on the ravine between Lake George and Lake Albert. At sunrise, you could sit and drink your coffee as the birds picked toast off your plate and warthogs nuzzled close to your feet. Elephants ambled slowly down to the water just across the lake and the hippos snorted and dove in the water. Naomi looked carefully at each and every animal on the game drives. She often looked back around at us after pointing at the elephant or water buck and wanted to make sure we hadn’t missed anything. Lendell was back in his element in the parks: binoculars in hand and ready to spot the tiniest kingfisher or the biggest lion pride. Kym captured the days with beautiful pictures and I got a few as well.
